costa maya

in costa maya today. just stood on the gangway for 4 hours in the sun taking pictures of people who didn't want their pictures taken any more. it's only monday people, you're gonna see me a fuckload before saturday rolls around. just roll with it, get the picture taken and get on with your day.

last night was miserable too. formal night. everyone gets all fancy and goes for steak and lobster. i stood in front of a backdrop of the bow of the ship and a sunset and people came to get cheesy formal portraits. ugh. 5 hours of that. then we had to wait for them to all print out and put them in the gallery before we could be done for the night. 1am again. great...tomorrow is santo tomas. i have the morning off, but apparently they're sending me on a tour to take pictures. i woke up with the cold/flu that the rest of the photo crew has had the last few weeks, so i think i'll ask not to go on the tour and just sleep or something.

if anyone can find a cheap flight from miami to minneapolis this saturday let me know. i'm desperate.

and i think i got pretty sunburnt today. i was all sick and out of it this morning when i woke up so i forgot sunscreen. smart huh? 5 or so more days.

then it's back to the cities to return to life as normal. thank god.

funny story though. really drunk old guy the other night came up to me while i was working in the gallery. slurring his speech, almost dropped his beer. he bought a picture and then struck up a conversation with me. it was about how the other night he had went out with some friends at one of the bars on the ship, gotten drunk, met some ladies and went back to their cabin. at the beginning of the night he had a half full memory card, and when he woke up the next morning it was full. he wanted to know if i would like to see the photos. i politely declined. he then asked if i would like to meet him in his cabin later. awesome. ew.
so i went, obviously. i mean, i'm not gonna use up all the garlic spout and biffy gave me if i don't right?

kidding.

so today is photo crew lunch in costa maya. which is nice, since my manager pays for it. but i'm not feeling well, so it won't be very enjoyable. and the thought of working more tonight doesn't help that at all.

alright. time for more...

life as a sailor isn't all garlic and limes

haven't written in this damn thing forever...

but after the last week of living on the norwegian sun, i need to write down some of the shit i have experienced.

first off, if you didn't know. (and if anyone is actually reading this). i have been hired as a photographer for trans ocean photo who works with norwegian cruise lines. i was sent down to miami last saturday to board the norwegian sun, one of the cruises that goes to the eastern and western caribbean. i live on the ship for free, meals also free. let's just say it all sounded too good to be true.

here's what i was told...
-don't have to clean your own room. cabin stewards come through almost daily to vacuum, clean the bathroom and replace linens.
-don't have to do your own laundry. it's picked up by the laundry people and returned to you clean and ironed.
-can eat anywhere on the ship for free.
-can go anywhere on the ship you want.
-can enjoy the same perks that guests on the ship do.
-would work long hours but have plenty of time to visit the beautiful islands we were cruising.
-would make between $400-$500 a week in cash.

here's what i got.
-we had cabin stewards. and now we don't. as of yesterday, there are no more cabin stewards. so my roommate and i are bribing one of them to come clean our room for us. otherwise we have to go down to the laundry area at specific times to get new linens, cleaning supplies etc. aka, my room would never be clean and i would use the same towels for months.
-we don't have to do our own laundry, but it takes 4 days to get it done.
-we can't eat anywhere on the ship but the crew mess (which is bad cafeteria food). UNLESS we get a slip of paper signed not only by our manager, but the hotel dept. head. then we have to pay for it.
-we can only go everywhere on the ship when wearing out uniform and our nametag. we cannot go to the casino. we cannot go up on deck swimming or sunbathing.
-we work insane hours. 7am-1pm. then 3:30-12am or 1am. there is no time for us to enjoy the islands we are at. i have had to dress up in a dolphin costume for 5 hours in the 100 degree heat of samona. have had to bug people to get their picture taken with a pirate. i have had to walk around on the pool deck and bother people while they are relaxing to take their picture. i have had to pose people on a cheesey backdrop in at least 7 poses for hours. i have had to walk around the dining rooms on formal night and inturrupt dinner to get pictures. even if i do have a few hours off, i don't want to go out because i'm too tired or have errands to run on the ship. never in the mood to go to the crew bar, which is always too damn loud anyway.
-we will make $400-$500 a week. but when working the hours we do, i'd rather be home doing the same and working less.

so that's the run down. basically i live in a rocking closet. and today it's really rocky. it's a nice day out, but the whole boat is moving a lot. made it hard to sleep last night.

i did get lucky with the people i work with though. there are only 6 photographers and one manager. the manager is from south america and is a total douche. the other photographers are nice. i live with the other girl, lee, who is also south american. she's nice. we get along well. vio is romanian, bastiaan is from the netherlands, melvis is..shit...puerto rican or something and the new guy, samuel is canadian. i have found maybe 2 others on the ship who are from the states. the photographer who left saturday was from new york.

this job sucks big fat goat. ship life is not for me. i cannot stand not being able to just get in my car and go somewhere.

let's just say that i will be seeing the midwest again shortly.
though i will be seeing costa maya tomorrow (at least i think that's where we are going first).

i'll write more of the lovely experiences i've had with the guests later. since it's costing me a shitload of $ to have wireless internet and i get 2 hours for $20. dammit...

it's been a while huh?

i think i'm going through my 'quarter life crisis'. john mayer-style.
i'm turning 24.
graduating college.
no idea what will come next.
a little freaked out.

i think i should buy a really expensive car and date someone half my age (which is illegal...but i'll just go with someone younger).

so it's been almost a month since i've written...
i used to be good at this thing.

super busy with classes and work. i just wish i could have one summer of just fun. no class. i suppose, that's what i get for a) transferring 3 times b) switching majors a zillion times and c)wanting to graduate in december.

work is alright. i could use more hours, which means more $, but then i don't have the time to study and stuff that i need to do. the 4th sucked. i was bored. made a third of what i made last year.

meg from florida came to visit the weekend before the 4th. that was alot of fun. she came and marched the delano parade with us, handing out water and stuff. we made her wear a 'better dead than red' tshirt. she didn't like that much. she's going to uw for grad school.

i can't wait till classes are done and i can relax for a few weeks before spat. wait...relax? yeah right.

well...it's too damn early and i've got to go to class.
